HD keeps "working"

Hi

I am new here and a complete amateur regarding HD drives.
I've searched the forum for related post but couldn't find one.
My problem is that my hard disk keeps working. It's almost constantly making noises. I don't know the word for it, but you can probably guess. It's like it's always writing something down. It stopes just occasionaly.
I don't actually know if that is a big problem, but it's annoying.
Is there a tool that can help me with it, or does anybody know how else to fix it (beside buying a new one)?

Maybe your computer is alive... you may need a sorcerer, not an IT expert.
Otherwise, if some program or process is using the HDD, it is normal for the HDD to "work". Sorry but I don't get you, it's like saying I turned on the key on my car and I hear the engine work, is it normal ?
If you hear ANOTHER strange noise like hiss, scratching, clicking or similar, your hard drive has problems.

In some cases acoustic noise can be regulated...
It really depends on what is causing the problem. If you can, record the noise and uploaded it to the net, so that we can examin it. That would help!

In order to upload the file you can use something like megaupload, or Uploading dot com if you don't have access to an ftp server.

Using P2P applications, such as uTorrent will cause such behavior, drive in PIO mode will cause such behavior. As I found out last week on my own laptop, failed RAM chip underclocks the system and causes such behavior. Failing drive causes such behavior.

Resolution:

1. Backup everything about which you care. Optionally, make a disk image of the drive.
2. Run MHDD or Victoria or HDDTest on the drive (the last two options run in Windows)

If you see excessive number of colored blocks or alphanumerics on the screen, replace the drive

If you see mostly gray with occasional colored blocks and no alphanumerics, the drive is fine

3. End.

If you are paranoid, take your drive to a local data recovery expert and solicit their opinion.
