Can an unknown password be removed or replaced from the drives firmware?

Your question can not be correctly answered becasue you have not given enough information. ATA passwords are stored differently on most drives, and each have different ways to remove them, some simple, some more difficult. That is why you do not have a good response.

The method of setting passwords on hard drives is proprietary to each vendor. No free software is available to do this. However, they can be removed by DR services that have the specialized equipment to do so. If the data is important you can check with DR companies in your vicinity; it shouldn't be an expensive proposition. We charge a reasonable cost for the service if you run into a wall finding someone in your area. PM us if desired. Good luck.

It would be much easier, if the region / country of a forum member has to
be completed with apropriate data - that all other members get this info.
Some of the members do, but unfortunately the majority not....
It could create contacts quicker if one knows that another forum member
is just "around the corner" ...

Thanks for the positive posts and info. For anyone wanting to do it your self this seems to be what you will be looking for:

Linuxguy - that thing appears to be simply an RS-232 terminal and a manual. The instructions for that are available online, perhaps even in this forum. The expanded kit is a bluff and doesn't exist.

I posted a parts list a while ago how to make an RS-232 terminal for those who didn't want to solder one together.
In summary, you are paying for the manual.
