Advice on possible faulty Raptors

Hi, I wonder if someone could offer me some advice? This is my first post, so please excuse me if I haven't provided all the needed info.

I have 2 x WD740GD Raptor drives, and have recently been having some problems with them. (mainly corrupt Windows boot files so that XP won't fully load)

They were originally in a RAID 1 array but I imaged them, broke the mirror, and tried using each on its own as a boot drive.

They are both still under warranty but the WD Diagnostics tool passes both as OK. I've used MHDD to check both disks and the Smart logs are below. I don't want to return them to WD and then be charged because they say that they aren't faulty, so would be grateful for some advice on interpreting the results.

Based on my limited understanding of the numbers, the only thing that stands out is the CRC errors on the first drive. I have replaced the cables on both just to be sure.

I also ran a Scan using MHDD, and the second drive showed Warnings on 2 sectors, along with quite a few sectors that had high seek times compared with the first drive.

Is there anything else that stands out from the above, or are there other checks I can run? Do you think these drives are faulty or is there something I can do to repair or improve them?

Hi,

Your only problem is, the WD-WMAKE1661867 have one unreadable sector, wich can be corrected by write or will be re-allocated on spare space.

This drive will not pass the long read test in the WD diags...

Anyway these drives looks good, not need to replace.

Thanks. Is it worth zero'ing the disk and reformatting? Would that make any difference?

yes, maybe will be OK again.

Anyway, i always suggest to my customers, replace all hdd wich older than 2 year, independently the condition...

That's probably good advice, and ordinarily I'd replace the Raptors, but I'm thinking about changing PC soon.

I don't worry too much about losing my OS drive as it's fairly easy to rebuild, either from an image or from scratch. I have separate drives for data, and back those up - and the backup drives don't get used for anything else, so will hopefully last a while.
