Hitachi DeskStar HDS728080PLAT20 PCBSwap, can't locate NVRAM

January 13th, 2009, 1:56

Dear Gurus:

I have a Hitachi Deskstar HDS728080PLAT20 that died on me. Won't spin. I assume the PCB is dead. I got a donor hard disk, same model, pcb codes match, look the same.

Now, I am very novice in this matter, so I thought I could just swap the PCBs, but from reading forums I find that I need to transfer NVRAM as well. I'm just a user, and I have no clue how to do it. I can, however soldier basic things, and as far as I understand, I can re-soldier some 8-legged chip.

I found this image, which looks a lot like my PCBs:

Someone on these forums said that the chip is an 8-legged chip above the "Infineon" chip.. but all I have is a blank space there. The 8 contacts are there, but there is no chip, neither on the donor or the original PCB.

So.. mine kind of looks like this one:

Please help me locate the chip. I will post a picture as soon as I get my hands on a camera.

Are there any 8-legged chips at all? If you can read the part numbers on them then use google to find out what they are.

I have no idea...

There's only one 8-legged chip that says: "RL76 5k13M"; it's small and googling it doesn't give me any info.
On the second image, it's the one in lower-right corner.

If anyone knows anything about this, please post. I need help asap.

Yes. It worked. It worked for about 20 minutes before the PCB fried, but I got most of the data back that I wanted. Thank you.

Sorry to bring this back from the past, but if you're still around, could I ask you why the new PCB fried in 20 minutes? Was the power source to blame, or was the soldering imperfect? Or, something else?
