January 15th, 2009, 11:58

I have a WD740ADFD - 00NLR5

The drive comes ready on PC3000 but i cannot access any data.

i have tried to run the utility but i am not sure what family the drive is. it wont allow me to access the drive in kernel mode.

drive doesnt click. i have tried a PCB swap already and tried to mount drive but that didnt work.

any ideas please? thanks in advance

What did u got on ATA registers?, tried any tool like MHDD,HDDL,Victoria etc or another wich could send ATA commands and check answer to "get sectors commands" and know the answer from the HDD

Regards

it's Marvell based if that helps ;o)

I will try it on MHDD. An initial scan on MHDD indicated a possible firmware fault i think. It scanned with all !!!!!!!!!!!!

This is Odyssey family HDD, it's wdc based, but have different addressing than previous wdc (5 bit cylinder addressing for wdc and 6 bit cylinder addressing for Odyssey). DIR module reading commands are different for 32 and 64 cyl (for 32: 0000 00 02 00 80 0F E0 20; for 64: 0000 00 02 00 C0 0F E0 20). This is why PC3Kpci, when trying to read -1 track, hits on -2: for 6 bit cylinder address 0000 00 02 00 80 0F E0 20 is actually -2 track (10'00=8 1111=F and for -1 track the address should be 11'00=C 1111=F). Rest of commands needed for SA operations are almost the same as for wdc32.

Maybe this could be interesting to understand a "little" about that?

I recently replaced heads on one of these.

It is of the Odyssey family (SATA) but it is NOT a Marvel series., and it is supported by PC3000 UDMA.

Once you find and select the proper utility, check the modules -- you might have a bad translator, etc.

Good luck!

Hi Everyone,

I am still unable to access this drive, in kernel mode or normal mode. I have downloaded firmware from files.hddguru along with a PC3000 convertor .bat but i do not know how to use the convertor or use the firmware with the drive to give me access.

Bear with me I hope, i am newish to PC3K and learning the ropes. Thanks for any help at all.

EDITED for further info.

I get the error message
"WD Techno ON Error Device Error Detected 51/04 (ABR)" when trying to autodetect the drive.

Would this indicate the need for a head swap as Spaz mentioned?

I havent mentioned head swap. I think you must be confused.

Sorry HDDSpaz. You mentioned it on another topic i started. I got confused.

It is 10am! lol

"WD Techno ON Error Device Error Detected 51/04 (ABR)" when trying to autodetect the drive.

This means that the drive does not recognise the command.

51h = Value in Status Register Bit 1 set = Error)
04h = Value in Error Register Bit 3 set = Command Aborted - Invalid Command

So the registers are telling you that the command being sent to the drive is not supported by the drive - when sending Vendor specific commands - techno on.

Try a different family of drive.

Apologies guy's this shold be Bit 0 and Bit 2 :)

I still cant access kernel mode?!

Thanks scratchy, i have tried marvell and a few other familys but still get the techno error.

Can i make sure i have the jumpers in the correct position please?

PCB

OOOO : : : : DATA POWER
^ ^ ^
CHASSIS

I have the jumpers on the first 3 positions next to the legacy power connector.

I have a good donor from which i have read SA modules and tracks and ROM. But i cannot get the faulty drive into kernel mode. With the jumpers on the drive does not spin so i assume i have it in safe mode....

Shall i just try autodetect with every single option in the utility, until i have tried all familys? Thanks for any help again, i hope i am asking the right questions and making sense.

The safe mode on this model doesn't work the way it works on the others
That's why you "can't access it"
It's normal

I have never needed kernel mode on this drive before, but how exactly is it different? Is access via kernel mode still possible on this drive?

Hello,
Just Invoking a Old thread To Give My Inputs .PC 3000 UDMA-e Ver 6.1.14 That i Have Does Work With This Drive .You Have To Select Caviar Cyl32 [SATA] Utility ,Then Click Auto detect And It Will Select Odyssey For This Family .Its Not Marvell Hence Its Not Detected In Marvel Techno Utility .

Ps : Hope This Helps Someone
