Maxtor DiamondPlus unexplained failure

January 21st, 2009, 6:36

After having completed the tranfer of two HD from one computer to an identical one, one of the two HD at the switch on burned out. The HD is a Maxtor Diamond Plus 8, an ATA/133 unit. At power switch-on the chip carrying the green led went afire and blew. I'm quite sure I did not mess up with the power connector since I did this several times before. and have a good familiarity with my PCs. I doubt the culprit is the controller because the second disk, that I connected as a slave to the sanme data cable, behaved correctly.
Since the disk contains important data and I believe they are still on the platters , I would like to know if I can restore the HD functionality by replacing the PCB (assuming I can find an HD twin....)

Any help will be wellcome...

the failed chip can be seen in the top right of the picture, close to the power connector.

That burn might have damaged pre amp. Also firmware might be bad as a result of an incorrect write to the disk service area during burn. The data is easily recoverable by a pro. If its important, seek pro help.

If you have 2 identical drives, why not transfer PCBs to determine electronics?
