Hi all once again I am keeping myself busy
I have the following drive giving me problems
Seagate 40gb
U6 Model ST340810A
P
9T7002-304
HDA P
100188744
FIRMWARE 3.39
CONFIGURATION CODE U2P-02
CONFIGURATION LEVEL BSMF3
the drive is klunking side to side with no sign of comunication
I understand in attempting to swap the head unit on these drives
you need to recalibrate the heads?
Can anyone shine any light on this topic
or who have had similar probs?
I have seen this several times before with 20gb and 60gb
cheers

Hi Malcolm,
Please don't think I'm trying to be funny, but.
Much like a rocket in the 1950s with a faulty gyro - you could never tell where it might go.
If the data is important - send it to the experts.
ps. the heads cannot be re-calibrated.

c'mon people you can do better than that
There has been no attempt to replace the heads on this drive as yet
this is a single platter drive
and although I have a reasonable success rate with head and platter replacement
I like to research now and again
If its a common problem, someone might be able to express there experiance. for us all to learn
cheers

I'd performed a head swap on this drive earlier this afternoon. Appears to have gone well. No clicking noises. I'll let you know what I learn regarding Init.
