Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi
I have ST3500320NS from defective seagate series which is recognized by bios as ST_M13FQBL. I know about this series problems with CC and BSY errors, but in this case i cannot comunicate with pcb with and without installed on hdd. Im using CA-42 nokia cable. Termianal and cable working properly with older seagate discs. Is there any chance to bring it back to live.
Thanks for any suggestions

Would you mind explain what are you doing exactly?
February 24th, 2009, 7:52
I assume your PCB is defective, or even SATA cable/port. Also, I think maybe baud rate is wrong in terminal, but I really would recommend you stop what your doing and consult a professional if data is important.

Disk is detected as:
ST_M13FQBL
serial: QNR_BFW
Firmware: 1204F3C8
Serial cable is working properly on the seagate ST3160815AS with 9600 8,n,1,n when i try to communicate with ST3500320NS with 38400 8,n,1,n there is no any answer from pcb. I have exactly the same second working disk and im wondering is there a possibility to install good pcb and try to follow this quide
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128807Disk was the same issue in different sata ports, cables, and even computers.
Thanks

As I said in my last post, I think its time to consult a professional. There could be a number of reasons for this fault, and any information you get here will be based purely on guesswork.

The problem is elsewhere.

Drive has partially initilized from ROM that makes such thing

Hi
I have ST31500341AS from defective seagate series which is recognized by bios as ST_M13FQBL. I have appeared in the same situation as well as "acki". As stand in computers and ST3500320AS and ST3500320NS and ST3320620NS and two ST31000333AS in D-Link 323 - after happened it becomes terrible

Hi gents,
I have 2 discs here with an identic problem:
- ST3750330NS, S/N: 9QK1LSX4, FW: SN05
- ST31000340NS, S/N: 9QJ21BF8, FW: SN05
At least one of them was damaged by an external voltage drop.
Both are klicking after spin-up, and will not get ready. Only PCB connected, I can see the following data (on BOTH discs!) in PC3K:
Model: ST_M13FQBL
S/N: QNR_BFW
FW: 1204F3C8
capacity: LBA 8089950 (3.86 GB)
Does anybody have a helpful idea, how to solve that problem? For me it looks like defective ROM-Data, caused by the outcome of external voltage drop.
I tried shorting the read channel, but for typing "/2" + "Z" my fingers are a little bit too slow.
Thanks in advance!
Thomas

Ok, both drives are repaired now. I used the wrong test tips for shorting.
Standard procedure was working fine
August 10th, 2010, 16:38
Can you tell us any more about this physical "read channel shorting" ?
Is this a standard (PC300 based) technique
Presumably it only applies to certain Seagate models ?
To force it into 'factory mode' ?

Here is a nice description, with a picture:
http://www.msfn.org/board/unlocking-ter ... 29551.htmlI saw these phenomenon only at the 2 ES.2 drives, not anywhere else.
The solution is independend from PC-3000; you can also use any other terminal, e.g. Nokia CA-45 cable, or HD doctor (of course you should understand the seagate commands, and not use 1-click-solutions...).
The background for shorting the read channel is:
The disc loads parts of the firmware from platters, then a faulty part will be recognized (LED:000000CC...). In this moment you have a chance to stop loading the faulty firmware by shorting read channel (and switching spindle motor off: ^z, "/2", "Z") - the terminal is now accessible.
Then you can remove the tips, start motor ("U"), type "/1", "N1" (reset S.M.A.R.T.), switch off, switch on, "m0,2,2,,,,,22" (regenerate translator) - voilá!

Hi,
I have a 1.5TB Seagate 7200.11, model ST31500341AS, FW: CC3H. When connected in Linux, it shows up as incorrect information. In HD Doctor, the drive goes ready with the following:
Model: ST_M13FQBL
Serial: QNR_BFW
FW: 1117F393
LBA: 8089950
I've been reading around and have seen some fixes, but none of these deal with this problem as the drive is not ES.2. The motor is starting to go out, as it has locked up a few times and I have had to free it.
Anyone have any suggestions for repair? Is this a corrupt FW issue, or maybe a standard 7200.11 problem that may be fixed in HD Doctor? Possibly something for Terminal Mode?
Thanks for any help in advance!

This drive needs pro help.
August 19th, 2010, 3:06
Hi Dizidago357,
did you try and understand my description above? Maybe this behaviour comes also with new 7200.11 firmware. Only seagate knows...
Normally during disc start you interrupt firmware sectors reading by insulating PCB's motor connection. But for this special failure, PCB must read a couple of sectors first. So in the moment you see the failure message in terminal (LED:000000CC...), you have to short read channel to interrupt reading further sectors (I use good micro probes). That's it. Than you reset S.M.A.R.T. and translator, like usual.
If you're not succesful, send me the disc, and I will try it for you (with a little fee).
Kind regards,
Thomas

I have seen this symptom in cases where motor is not spinning to correct speed, or has some eccentricity from released bearings.
drc is right, you need pro help. I think no ammount of terminal comands will help here.
November 9th, 2010, 12:30
Sorry it's been so long. Thanks all for the replies. I know the motor issue will need more than terminal commands to repair, but assuming I can get the drive to spin for a short time, I only need a small amount of data off the drive. That was my reasoning for asking if there were any ways to repair the issues with accessing the drive and the possible corrupt FW.
Thanks!

Hey Dizidago357,
I have the same problem as you. Please confirm me if you solved the problem. This is the type of external hard disk that I have (I think the same as you):
Unit Model: Seagate Desktop
Model: ST_M13FQBL
Serial Number: QNR_BFW
Firmware Revision: 1117F393
One day I couldn't see the letter of the disk once connected to my laptop. I tried to recover the data using the following software:
• Advanced Disk Recovery
• Disk Doctors Windows Data Recovery(FAT)
• Disk Doctors Windows Data Recovery(NTFS)
• EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard Professional 5.0.1 Demo
• EasyRecovery Professional Trial
• Recover My Files
• Total Recall Data Recovery Software
The output from the “SeaTools for Windows” was:

Victor,
No solution, but being that this is my personal drive and not a customer drive it has been put on the back burner. Every now and again I work on it for an hour or so, but no solutions yet. Has anyone else seen this and had success?
