Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Installed in my desktop test computer and it will not get past bios.
I peeled away the sticker and the heads would move but would not make it onto the platters... click click click like banging it's little head against a brick wall. I took off the cover and played with the heads GENTLY until they would move freely. I was just trying to see what was stopping it but they started working. Now the bios at first sees an IDE drive at it's location but I cannot get into bios or boot the computer with this drive installed. The heads move over the platters now!
So I read that platter swapping is out. What should I try? Can I swap heads or is that a big no no as well?

Well, you've got 2 options, one is that the heads got damaged when they stick to the platters.
The other option is that you may have some problems in SA, so first of all you should check your drive with a tool to check SA, because if the problem is related to SA, head swap won't solve your problem.

Use MHDD or something similar to see what the drive is doing... ie. does it ID or not, etc.

These heads are about to crash if not already crashed.

Sounds as though heads were stuck to the platter, fairly common and fairly simple solution, but now you have total head failure.
consult a pro, or say bye to your data.

Most likely, you will create more damage or totaly destroy your data without proper tools.
