Samsung Spintpoint SP2514N power overload

Hey everyone. I was given a Samsung SP2514N from an external Lacie enclosure. The person admitted to plugging in the wrong AC Adapter which caused the drive to break. It doesn't spin up or respond in any way. I posted a thread in the buy/sell section for a PCB. How are Samsungs when it comes to PCB replacement. Will any ol' SP2514N work or should I try to match part number / PCB numbers as well.

The information would be nice to have, but by no means is critical.

P.S. Does anyone know any good pro services in Sacramento, California? It would be nice to have a company to refer.

There is a certain chance the damage is limited to pcb - I repair the pcbs too. If drive click/no Id/id but doesn't read with new pcb it's time for a pro. Simple.

Samsungs are relatively sensitive to FW mismatch, so it is not easy to find a compatible pcb.

The electronics seem to be shortcircuited now and I really need to recover the data. Any chance that someone might be able to sell me a circuit board for this thing?
I have no clue where to look for the FW version, but the closest thing to a version number I see on the label is 2006.11

If so, set your multimeter to the 200 ohms range and measure the resistance of the two TVS diodes near the power connector. The 12V diode appears to be the vertically mounted part near the screw, and the 5V diode appears to be the horizontally mounted part a little to the right of the connector.

Confirm that neither of the zero ohm links are open. They should both test as shorts. If either is open, replace it with a 2A picofuse, or bridge it with a wire.

You can remove the shorted TVS diode by snipping it out with side cutters. The drive will work OK without it, albeit without protection on the affected supply rail.

You needed to only remove the diode that measured zero ohms.

Now you need to find the zero ohm link that doesn't measure zero ohms. That will be the bad one. Replace it with a piece of wire, or a 2A picofuse.

I have to say that I read your post at the good moment :
-I first try to buy another sp2514N HDD with the same Rev.A. I exchanged the cards but the hdd was turning but I was not able to access to it (in windows and linux, and also with the samsung boot disk estools)
-I thus decided to open the box and exchange the platters but as they are 2 platters I read on different forums that an amateur couldn't realign such platters...
-and I see your post !

The 12v TVS diode was actually shorted, thus I remove it
The 0 ohm link near the tvs diode was broken (high resistance) so I shorted it with a wire.

I saved 230Gb of data, including 15 years old family films

Hi, first post here. Just to say thanks for the brilliant advice on the Diodes.. Never thought of that as a solution...
Have the same samsung disc here, that was in the same LaCie external cabinet.. It seems that the power supply is busted, so it fried the diode and the zero-link.. But fzabkar, your advice worked here too, you saved me a bundle of money, and gave me a bundle of joy in addition. My precious work was saved.. I'm very thankful.. =) (btw, i have taken a backup now.. No more chances taken with that disc.. )
