Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi,
My samsun 320 GB USB disk formatted with a ntfs partition suddenly refuses to mount under Ubuntu Linux. I ran testdisk to diagnose the disk and it found some bad sectors.
Is there any way to fix it, preferably with linux tools? How can I check if it is a hardware or software problem?
Thanks.

Hi,
First you should remove the drive from the case and try to mount it.
If that doesn't help, run a scan to the hdd to mark bad sectors.
If that doesn't help, we can check what's the drive problem for you, we're in the same country.

I was writing about the linux "mount" command
http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl8_mount.htm, not
physically attaching the drive...

I ran a diagnostic tool called testdisk and it found bad sector but I would like to know if it is a hardware problem and
how to solve it. Unfortunately I don't have Windows XP so I can't tell if Windows would be able to read the hard drive.

How much bad sectors have you found?
Well, without having some proper tools to check the drive, it's quite difficult to get a proper diagnosis and besides that, if the data is important, you are risking a bit.
If you want, we can check the drive and tell you what's the problem.

I didn't save the log form the tes but I think it was just one sector.
