problems with Seagate ST3500630AS 500GB

i am having an issue and am a bit stuck

Got the above drive in, initially it would not ready and shows errors in terminal as below

Recieved my exact donor and replaced heads ( donor is a perfect match)

i reaplced the heads, connected tp pc3000, drive powered up and became ready, all good so far, launched DE and cold see partitions,

i powered down so i could install a drive to image
when powered on again the drive will not become ready, and will not id
i get the below terminal results

Let this be a lesson to you. Once it's working, don't switch it off! Also be better prepared. Was the work done in a clean room? Maybe some debris has been swept across the platter over SA. Possible that new heads are now bad.

i always have a drive attached for imaging but just one of those which i overlooked this time.
yep all work was done in a clean room, platters were completely clean when drive reassembled.

Put the heads back into the donor drive. See what happens.

i was thinking of that but wanted to minimise moving heads back and forth again as the drive was hard to source.

as i could not progress any further i did swap heads back into original drives, so the donor head is back in the dopnor drive as disucssed and the donor drive works perfectly fine. this indicates that the work in replacing the heads back and forth is all done 100% successfully with no damage.

The original heads from the patient are back in the patient and the follwing is appearing

it sounds like the drive is spinning up, a small click and possibly not reaching correct operating speed.

When i install the donor board to the patient drive i get exactly the same log as abov.

When i install the patient board to the donor board all works perfectly well.

So this rules out the heads and the controler board.

I am suspecting possibly spin up speed issues due to problem with motor.

As a final test which has not been done i guess i can install the patient heads to the donor and see what happens. but before doing this i would like to see what your /other thoughts may be with this one.

Has anyone experienced spindle speed problems ?

whats the history with the disk? Was it dropped? I suspect damage to the media.

I don't believe it was dropped it was in a customers desktop worked fine one day and not the next
When I had it in the cleanroom again today for head swap I checked again for scratches and can't see any with microscope

I guess it only leaves media or spindle damage

Will do some more tests and post

You can get sratches on the underside of the platters too. Rule of spindle failure but swapping the platters but I seriously doubt this is the fault.

If it is a scratch on the other platters I would of mabye expected some dirt on the filtercwhich if clean

And then there is the heads from the donor which worked fine for a minute in the patient then stopped working but work fine in the donor again which I would think would rule out media damage

But discssing this is making me think more clearly

Personally this is what I would do now.

Platter swap, then test.

If no different, source another drive then hot swap, then test.

The filter doesn't always get dirty when media damage occurs.
