seagate st3500820as trouble

hi im trying to fix my father in laws hdd
it was originally in a external unit
the drive is dead no noise etc but when plugged in via sata on my desktop the desk to wont even switch on untill i remove the drive it like a dead short on the drive

the details are
seagate barracuda 7200.11
st3500820AS
firmware sd81
500gig

i was wondering if i buy a drive off ebay that is clicking which the pcb looks identical can i swop them and recover the info as pc world where it was bought from wanted £700
any help or ideas would be great thanks dave

If data is really important for your father in law, I'd suggest you to contact either Sean (nickname : pcimage) or Steve (nickname : Steve) in this forum. They are very excellent at this.

The method of swapping the PCB directly will not help much if problem is not there.
