WD800UE Scorpio: not understanding ramp/head config

March 12th, 2009, 18:59

Hello there:
received above disk, no spin up. opened in cleanroom, sticktion, freed. BUT I am not getting something here as the heads will not park on the ramp.

The ramp itself is "adjustable" front and back, ie it can be slid more on or off the disk. Not seen b4 either, most have a "positive" position with only screw tolerance. Also, the "little turn ups" and the end of the heads appear to be too flat to side onto the ramps, instead they are tending to go under. What the hell!

I have not taken the HS off yet as I need to understand whats going on.

On opening disk some metallic crap on platters, filters clean, no scoring so not headcrashed?

Are you sure the heads are still actually attached to the arms?

On the ones I have seen before the correct position of the ramp is fully engaged towards the platters... I have had ones of those where the head arms or plastic fins on the ramp are bent causing the heads to jam up under the ramp fins when trying to go onto the ramp.

Yup. And I've seen them with heads stuck on platters or in the ramp. These are very delicate about head parking.

thanks guys, pcimage has it, i removed the HSA and the lower head (disk has 3) has vaporized, lowering the carrier and hence catching under the ramp. HSA swap on (lets see if client will pay first)..

cheers

PS and HSA swap tips or matching criteria most welcome ;)

Or more commonly stuck to the lid or the magnet.

I think you may have damaged the head yourself trying to correct stiction without performing correct procedure. Describe exactly how you did it.

Hi Spaz, I know how to free a stuck head, and no, it's not that youtube "guide" with the guy and the screwdriver. ;) I will have a better look tonight, looking for donor now. The metalic crap on the top platter was wierd. Have you seen a head completly disintegrate before? I have not, could it be?

I am hoping the bottom of the lower platter is not ugly, will try to peak tonight (you don't need to tell me not to remove the platters either ;)

ONE DETAIL: the "don't cover" pressure EQ hole was covered very well by the client with a sticker!!! And, as you know its a notebook drive, and I am in a very high altitude change country where driving up to 4000M ASL is not hard. I wonder if it had some effect?

I ask if you could decribe your method. Repairing stiction on this drive is different to other brands.

Do you still have the circuit board for this drive laying around?
I need a donor circuit board.
