Logic board on WDK3200AAKS hdd shorting out power supplies

April 20th, 2009, 19:30

I have a WDK3200AAKS western digital hdd that had recently failed in a mybook external hard drive. So i took the hdd out and plugged it in my mobo and it shorted out my PSU, I did some tests and switched the logic board from another western digital hdd to the bad drive and the motor spun and the computer booted without acknowledging the hdd.

Thats how I knew the Logic board from the drive was shorting out the power supply(ies) [I tried this on more than one] and such, my issue is, is there a way to repair the logic board or is there any way to do something inorder to get my drive working with the logic board without it shorting out power supplies?, because I know that switching out the logic board from similar hdd will not get me to my data, please help.

Also, there is no sign of damage to the logic board or any of the circuitry.

Probably a TVS. Do a search in the forums.

you are correct dr, and i realise it is the tvs and where the tvs is, but how do i remove it? do it just pop it off, or do i have to replace it with another tvs?

I just want to test if it will power on without the tvs, i do not want to replace the tvs or anything like that. but i do not want to be rash and just break it off. please help

Typically you would just desolder it. You can find info about safely testing your PCB without the TVS in some of the other threads.

If you remove your TVS and board still has a short, it could kill preamp chip, which will cost you big $$$$. You should test your board without a drive it self.

Thanks for the concern, harddrivespecialist, it is greatly appreciated. I tested the 12v TVS and it came up with 0, which i read means "fully shorted" so I removed it and the hdd came up and was recognized, I extracted that data as fast as I could.

I am very happy for your help and concern, HDspecialist and DR
