ST3160811AS

April 21st, 2009, 23:06

Hi All,
I have a drive that I am not sure how to diagnose.
ST3160811AS
FW: 3.AAE

Upon power up, it comes ready in normal time frame. When I try to detect it, it goes busy for quite a while but does eventually ID correct. Imaging is almost impossible though. I have to set delay before soft reset for a very long time or I get read errors. It doesn't matter what block size I set for imaging, it will read a block then take a really long time to come ready again and then read another block. Short delay times to reset just get lots of read errors. I can read any sector on the drive it seems if I just read that one sector.
Terminal shows:

Interface task reset
4096k x 16 SDRAM
TLITE2HD - 1_Disk S-69 06-20-06_14:34

Buzz - Head Mask FFFF - Switch to full int.

This goes on forever until I power off.
The weird thing is that the drive is not busy but is ready the whole tome this is going on.
So my question is, is this something that can probably be fixed through terminal or is it more likely a failing part.
Thanks for any help diagnosing if this is hardware or firmware problem.

I agree. I'm thinking very weak heads. Even when I just read a single sector, it takes about 3 seconds to read but all of the ones I have looked at do have good data.

No, this is a known issue with these drives.

Some times its not head, and with the proper tools & Knowledgment , its possible to " stop" some "tests" and get data back, need to send to a DR proof wich know that. "adding sectors to the pending list" a people who never works with that could tried head swap and if no works, no solution, need to know how to works with that " adding sectors to the pending list"

It's a standard "CE log" error, usually easily fixable.

Original culprit is usually slightly weak/dirty heads, or media degradation

In fact, I've just done one of these a couple of hours ago. Almost finished imaging.

Dam, you beat me to it. I did one yesterday same symptoms, 750 Gb 7200.10. Its easy to fix with the right tools.

Even Salvation can handle it.

When you say right tools, is that PC3000 or Salvation only? This is not something that can be fixed enough to image through terminal. IE fixed remotely? If it can be, it would be imaged using DE that comes with the cucumber, I mean HRT.

By terminal its póssible but u need to know how , :)

OK, I know there is no spoon feeding here but I figured maybe someone would tell me if I am at least on the right path. I have been looking at this all day.

Is the problem Data=58 and DER=001F?
I do understand if I have exceeded the help limits. 8)
