Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi,
my computer stopped working and did not start until I unplugged the HDD. On 5V there is a short circuit. The resistance in one direction is 60 ohms, in the other it is OK. After some reading I suspected the particular TVS and I removed it (see the picture, purple rectangle). It did not help. I separated the PCB and there is still the short circuit. Any suggestions? There are two more parts on the same segment. So which one should I remove first

.
The HDD is an old Seagate, I do not have the specification here, i can add it later.
Thanks.

Well, you didn't remove the TVS from the 5V line...

So what did I remove and where is the TVS?

There is a diode sign next to the removed part.
The drive is 40 gb model ST340015A

That looks like the 12V TVS to me.

After you change the resistance or TVS, and it still does working, I think you need to change the whole PCB from your HDD, pls go to your local repairing shop, they should have some PCB which was from the old HDD.

I have pretty much given up on posting replies to TVS problems. I keep getting this feeling of deja vu, almost like its been discussed here a hundred times already!!
If only there were a search function on this forum and people knew its purpose....

Thank you. Iam sorry, indeed the short was on 12V.
To summarize, there is a short on the 12V line even after removing the 12V TVS. The short is on the PCB as it is separated from the HD. What else could be wrong? The search on the forum did not help.

Probably the Smooth controller and perhaps some other components also.
Try finding another pcb; will be much easier
