western digital mybook not working ?????

May 8th, 2009, 19:53

any advice in this before i go into it more and spend some $$$$

Western Digital My Book

hard drive can be heared starting up so that rules out motor problem

then you can hear small clicking sound and then it stops

connected the drive up to pc3000 does not see the drive at all and no Communication with the board itself with the controller test.

tried hdd tool online can not see the drive at all.

im thinking this might be a fault in the logic board itself damaged.

dont think its the headstack as there no commmunication with the logic board at all.

common problem with these Western Digital My Book are overheating.

any one come across this before can i just match up the following and get this working again

western digital wd caviar se

mdl 2500jb-00rea0

dcm h8bhntjca

wd p/n WD2500JB-OOREAO

cheers

What happened when you tried a new PCB?

99% is a head problem, instead. The drive was shocked (probably). Simple pcb swap won't work. There is a small % probability about pcb, a diagnose with WD tool will leave no doubt.

yep looks like the power supply itself is to blame.
so next step would be to do a logic board swap.
and hope it did not take out the heads too.

i would had thought if the headstack was damaged
your still get some Communication from the pcb board itself
tried pc3000 and that can not see the drive at all

Do a correct diagnose FIRST, no "attempts" .

ok i check out the logic board for any damaged fuses that are gone.

but for sure the only way next is by getting a replacement logic board
and if that does not work
headstack is damaged.
its for sure not firmware corruption.

any other options on what to check.

I'm confused. He's saying that he gets no communication with the drive at all (i.e. no ATA registers light up or anything) and everyone's telling him its the heads?

Re: western digital mybook not working ?????

May 11th, 2009, 17:29

He says it spins up, ticks, then spins down again. Didn't see a mention of ATA registers.

I'm only going by what I can glean from the info given, but from experience this is classic bad heads symptoms. Could be wrong of course.

Re: western digital mybook not working ?????

checked the drive out again does not pickup at all.
no bad connection or blown parts.

loaded up pc3000 no communication with the drive at all.

so if there no communication with the logic board at all
does this mean its faulty or the headstack itself

so next option is that the headstack is faulty.

im 85% sure its the faulty heads
but the next options is swapping them over.
that is going to be the last resort.

is the exchanging of the headstack easy or are these drives using some type of special alignment before they are sealed up.

Re: western digital mybook not working ?????

So to clarify, what do the ATA registers look like?

Re: western digital mybook not working ?????

May 21st, 2009, 5:24

there is no comms with the board itself.
so no ata commands

Re: western digital mybook not working ?????

May 21st, 2009, 5:40

remove the board from the drive and try it,
if no communication at all, then replace the board.

I bet it's a ( PCB ) Problem until there's no ata registers show

ppl that sell those... Say that those equipments have lot of RMA's ...
They say it is because of the power supply having no power switches... it sends peaks when it is plugged to the electrical wall socket

Re: western digital mybook not working ?????

May 26th, 2009, 3:07

yep your correct on the power supply problem where it sends peaks when its plugged to the electrical wall socket.
no protection at all.
this is why its gone in the first place
the qeastion is has it taken the headstack with the logic board

so now im trying to track down a new logic board
but not having much luck at all as none of our sources have this model WD2500JB OOREAO

any ideas what we could try can we swap the rom over ??????

cheerss guys

According to my list some sabre drives should have the same PCB (701292)... look for JH or JJ.

have you checked ebay? From what you were saying, it appears that one of the heads might have failed. Consequently to that, the board went out while you were testing it. This happens often with WD drives; the board dies for no reason. For the board search, you may not need the exact size; if you have something in the same family, you can solder the rom on it. If the board is really dead, you may not read it with pc3000.
