Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts
May 12th, 2009, 9:15
Hi!
My name is Dany and I´m from Argentina. There are no real good data recovery service here in my country, and I have a dead SATA-2 Hitachi hard drive with very important data in it. I killed it in the foolest way: using it like a mobile drive without carrying case..

and accidentally touching the PCB with the metal part of the case.. I know, I know.. soooooo stupid.
I think the problem is the PCB, not the mechanical part but.. I bought 5 drives of same brand and model, exchanged PCBs, but none does the job (Firmware mismatch, I think).
I would like to know:
1) Regardless of PCB, firmware, etc.. can the data in the platters be read in other drive of same brand/model/head count ? I have 2 right now working ok, none (Even the dead) has been opened.
2) Considering my lack of tools and knowledge.. what data recoverer do you recommend, hddgurus? I read about myharddrivedied.com in Woodstock, GA.. but opinions are welcome.
If you need any other info in order to give a disgnostic, just ask
TIA, hddguru.com rocks!

You have to rewrite NV RAM on donor PCB with NV RAM from failed drive. Or swap the ROM chip.
If data is important why not ship the hard drive to the Brazil, USA or Mexico. We have members from Mexico (Beto) who I am sure will be able to help you.
I've just booked flights to Argentina to set up a data recovery lab. No competition, woohoo!

I think it´s impossible for me. Hotswap can work, or we better stay calm?

Well, I´ll try to contact Beto via PM. I really thank your recommendation!

Really? Here are a couple of honest people who doesn´t have resources.. and a lot of "chantas" (Guys with great advertisement and talking.. and no more). I would like to set up a data recovery lab, do you have an idea of costs?
Thanks!

Hot swap wont work.
Beto knows his stuff.
Approx 50 000 USD and around 5 years of research.

Guess why there are no DR services... Maybe no market?

Hi:
My problem is very similar but I listen 11 beeps on Hard drive and won't spin. I would like if I can swap a HDP725050GLA360 PCB with the same 2 first lines on white sticker PCB
I will appreciate any help to solve this problem
Thanks

oemb29,
I don't think your problem is same as OP.

"Same" problem meaning what exactly?
Need detailed description of what the drive is doing in order to get suggestions from members.

Hello All,
I have a simillar problem, Native PCB is BAD.
I have replaced the matching ROM Ver. PCB and was able to do NV RAM Adjustment ( SA SEARCH ) and find NV RAM.
With Adopted NV RAM is able to get SA access. Have written the NV RAM found from SA still unable to get the drive id.
Its unable to load the OPEN MODULES.
Help appreciated

If everything has been done correctly in terms of compatibility, then it seems like there is also a firmware problem.

Ok, let's see does ANY of the PCBs (native or donor) have a ROM chip ? If so can you DUMP the ROM content with external programmer ? I ask this because there might be a version of "NVRAM" code on external ROM chip.
When you replace the PCB and you adapt the NVRAM you gain access to the modules ? Can you read ALL the modules or does any of them have error ? Can you post the log of the PC-3000 reading the modules from SA ?
Maybe the NVRAM code doesn't contain the correct PBA location of the modules or the module directory/"road map" can't be found ? If you have written to the NVRAM chip but the donor PCB have external ROM chip maybe it's loading NVRAM code from a copy on ROM ?
Well,
To Add To Spildits Post i Would Ask What Tool Are You using Sir ?

Hi
I am using PC-3000 UDMA
SPLIDIT neither the Donor nor native have a external ROM on it. Else it would have been much easier to start it.
The MPU itself looks faulty to me as whichever PCB this MPU is fixed that PCB stops functioning.
Following is the log.

I'm not a data recovery professional, but doesn't the HDP725050GLA360 model look more like an HDx7250GL than an HDx7210SL?
I'm not sure that it would make any difference to the ID problem, though.

Hi
Sorry SPLIDIT may be its my mistake put this into a wrong thread i mean the MODEL.
My Model HDT721016SLA380.
ROM Chip is BAD can't Read even on external programmer ( May be somebody tampered it )
Even patient PCB is also BAD.
After adapting With Donor i am able to read the NVRAM Copy from SA for use.
As i don't have the original copy i can't compare with it.
Is there a way to use this NVRAM to start the drive or try another version of ROM ?
Thanks
May 19th, 2015, 8:44
Offcourse i am using the NVRAM from SA (Plater) on the NEW of DONOR PCB
May 19th, 2015, 18:16
Can you upload the NVRAM contents?
Does PC3K produce an NVRAM report? If so, what is the value of the "FW boot flag"?
May 21st, 2015, 4:14
This may be an ignorant question, but if the drive's "FW boot flag" is configured to boot from the F copy of the SA, wouldn't the absence of an F copy of the RSVD module cause a problem?
