WD2000JS-00MHB0 translator failed

May 18th, 2009, 2:52

Hi Guys

I have WD2000JS-00MHB0 with 1 head failed, disabled through headmap and no longer clicking, check all modules and found translator mod 31 error.

The problem is, i cannot regenerate translator without all functioning heads, if i enable the previously disabled head the drive clicking continuously.

DE head map building failed after 80% with a message "Error execute=Translator regeneration error Techno CMD sending error Device Error Detected: "DM TRANSLATION OUT OF RANGE"

Any clues? the last resort is to do head exchange which i would like to avoid if i can.

Thank you.

I think you can't avoid a headswap in this case.

Hi terranova,

When you disable the head, you can not copy the data with DE.

I have some cases like that and it can not copy it give error.

I Think iff the translator was ok you can not also copy the data because you have heads disable.

I know one way to do this, maybe is there any other way, to get the data from the others heads ;)

Hi Again,

Today i received a disk WD1200JS-00MHB1, that head 1 is off i disable it, and i could copy only the first sectors off head 0.
When i try to build the head map it also give me error :(

I had other case Kermit, that head 0 iss BAD the others Ok, i can build the head map Ok, but i can not copy any head in that family.

If WD marvel has damaged system head (0 or 1) you cannot copy data by health heads. If you'll disable head you get a translator problem. Switching off head is only for HDD repair/checking which of heads are corrupded. Cloning in DE by head map wont help 100%.
Let's wait genuis solution from ACE....

Confirmed. For this thing only I love Seagate - deactivate heads cannot be simpler...

I also have some cases that i disable head 5 and 6, and could get ID, but could not copy any head, with head maps.

Just wondering will head exchange work on this drive (same model and headmap) or the alignment is an issue ?

I think that alignment it will be your most problem.

Unless you know the secret how to do it ;)

Update:

Head exchange does not work with this drive, as soon as head 1 is turn off the translator failed i.e cant clone.

Is there a work around on Hawk?
