Seagate Momentus - Head Mask 01,01 Head Mask 01,02 ...

May 22nd, 2009, 6:30

Dears,

I have a problem with the drive:
Seagate 5400.2
ST96812AS

After switching the power on I can see through the terminal:

Interface task reset
4096k x 16 buffer detected
MERC2 - 1_Disk 0.05 01
Buzz - -20-06 15:53
Head Mask 01,01 - Head Mask 01,05 - Head Mask 01,06 - Head Mask 01,07 - Head Mask 01,08 - Head Mask 01,09 - Head Mask 01,0A - Head Mask 01,0B - Head Mask 01,0C - Head Mask 01,0D

Afterwords the disk stops and there is no communication with it.

I would be appreciate for any help to diagnoze my problem.

Best regards,
Rafael

This indicates a head crash with media damage. Very common problem with these drives, in our experience.

Hi,

The firmware is: 3.14.

Jono-ats,

you wrote that is possiblity of media crash? Does it mean the platter surface is damaged?

Rafael

Usually it is, in our experience. Typical pattern is start-up with four sharp clicks and then shutdown in about a minute.

You might be "lucky" but the odds are not in your favor . . .

The drive initaly had bearings problem.

I moved the platter into new one chassis (in clean room) but the problem is still there.

I am not sure but does the initialy position of platter matter?

If there is just one platter, it should not be a problem to swap motors. Look at the platter when it spins . . . can you see any evidence of misalignment?

When you swapped the motors, did you inspect the bottom surface of the platter for damage?

It is possible that the heads were damaged in the swap. I did not know that the drive was worked on - I assumed it was "as failed."

Jono-ats,

my apologies for lack of information.
The surface looks good.
I don't know if the heads were bad. Before I will order new ones I would like to be sure is it worth. Maybe the drive has other problem. The terminal says something completely strange for me. I've never seen that message.

Rafael

i know this thread is almost a month old, but what about the "update SP35474 SP33937.exe" file?? will this fix the problem?

reminds me of a older 320gb desktop drive that i used to own that just needed a firmware upgrade, i dont know why seagate doesnt test their crap out better instead of releasing so many firmware updates, i had to update the firmware on my 1.5tb drive as well.
