Hi Guys,
I have recently been refurbishing and repairing alot of iPod Drives(1.8" Hard Drives). I normally run a low level format, surface scan and the format to fat32. Can anyone suggest a better to do this.
i have been looking to buy a rack system hdd tester from YEC.
Thanks

Good idea and good product. There are similar products from other mfg. - their purpose is multiple test for service center and industry. Unfortunately the cost is high.

You need to add random read and write testing for the drives - it helps to check servo system
But basically you are not doing refurbishing because refurbishing recalcs adaptives, tests heads quality and remakes defect lists

Agree.

In the HDD business
Refurb = Test , Erase , check mechanics of drives + SMART etc
Recert = Factory recertification AKA SelfScan or SelfTest

Is it possible to recertify Toshiba iPod Drives. How can you do a self test. I have seen it done on Hitachi, WD laptop drives etc. But not on iPod Drives.

'check mechanics of drives'
Do you mean like doing a surface scan on the drive (butterfly test, random test or seek test)?

Yes. Or do SMART EXT TEST. Recert does a lot more and drive is like brand new except the working hours...

e,
Yess, I know recert is like brand new. But can it be done on Toshiba 1.8" Hard Drives (iPod Drives) Or any other 1.8" hard drives for that matter.
I believe i am correct to say it can be done on Samsung drives, but you need the burn codes, which is hard to get?

What it be OK to complete a secure erase and then a SMART EXT test on the drive. Would that check the drive completely? After I have complete those test, would the drive be 100 % tested and working (if it pass with no errors)?

The drive will not be 100% tested but if zero err reported it will be acceptable. If you have no other option...

What tests should be completed then for the drive to be 100% tested?

Selfscan.
