Seagate ST3320620AS - PCB help. 280gb potentially lost!!!

Hi everyone.

I'm gutted to be posting here, nothing personal it just means I’ve screwed up.

I own a ST332060AS 320gb HDD. Whilst adding two 1TB Samsung drives this morning I have managed to damage a surface mount component. It looks like some kind of transducer or similar, it has 3R3 written on it and is two on the PCB.

I'm not facing the possibility of losing 15 years worth of pictures, video etc.

Ironically I made a full back up of all my files before starting to add the new HDD. Guess which drive I backed up too.

I now need either an old board with the component on or if anyone has an entire PCB for sale or any ideas what to do I would be very grateful.

The damaged disk also contains a small partition of XP, which appears to have had my MBR on as my vista (upgraded) 64 will no longer boot. Tried the original disk repair but it looks like my perfectly working system and 600 GB of data might be lost.

I'm totally devastated, I have learnt a very hard lesson today,...

Get an identical pcb from scrap drive, remove the component you need and replace it on your PCB, it should work. If you're not comfortable with soldering SMD components, or you are worried about possible damage, contact a pro near you. I suggest pcimage from this forum (Sean). If the problem is only the component (it's a SMD inductor) it will be fixed quickly. Don't panic... NOTE : don't power the drive in such condition.
P.S. I have the part(s) you need, but the quickest way is to contact someone near you.

Firstly thanks for the quick response. I have been looking around to PCBs and the only spares i find are more expensive than buying a new HDD. I then run the risk of it not having the component on.

I'm confident at soldering the new SMD on, just need the bleeding part!!!

P.S. a note : the component is in a critical part of the PCB. There is the chance that operating in such conditions or if the damage happened when the drive was powered on, that something worst happened (I can't be "so" tech right now)... I suggest to get the drive analyzed by a pro, as you stated the data IS really important, to check in controlled conditions the health status. Better to be afraid BEFORE than sad LATER.

Thanks for the link mate. Now i'm really worried. I've ordered these:

They are almost the same but not quiet.

Looks like the current is different. Yours 3.7 mine 2.26 and the DC Resistance (DCR) is well off. Mine 34.00 mOhm Max and yours is 16.10 mOhm Max.

To be honest mine also seems about the right size, yours in 10mm x 10mm.

Does anyone understand any of this!!!!!!

I know! I have another package winging its way from China to me courtesy of another user on here.

They, I’m told are the exact parts off an old board.

Patience is not my strong point and I really want get this drive fixed!!!

Yours will work fine as well. the henries are whats important and you have that matched.

Can you explain henries! Are you talking about the Ohms or DCR?

God I wish the college I studied at all those years ago didn't cancel my HNC in electronic and electrical engineering!!!

He wants to say that only the inductance value=3.3µH it's important....And yours matches this value..

If you don't mind me asking, how much did the PCB cost you, out of interest?

Hopefully a lot less than the £99 I offered you for a complete no-fix no-fee recovery, and you'd have had it back by now

Anyway, I hope it works for you and good luck.

Edit: Just noticed it's just the component you've ordered, which surely will be cheaper, and hopefully do the trick

Lol, I always knew the 3R3 inductor would solve my problem but i had you guys as a backup.

I'm VERY pleased to say I have fitted and the part and I'm currently typing this from my fixed PC!!!!

Thankfully Vista booted happily and i have began the backup from the now fixed drive.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that posted advice, in particular ERIC LEE, you really have made my life a whole lot better.
