Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have a Western Digital WD7500AAKS drive that has failed. The drive spins up fine and initializes, and MHDD can see the drive properly, and gets proper ID and EID information. When testing the drive, all sectors return ABRT. I have verified the ATA password is not set.
Any suggestions?

We've been getting a lot of Western Digital drives like this lately. Even though they are recoverable, they can be really tough and time consuming. I'm thinking that we're going to have to quote higher for these drives, knowing that they will require a lot elbow grease.

Most likely not
TXRanger, this is tough case if you wouldn't be able to fix it by yourself - you can send it to us

@Doomer... from the symptom I suspected the SA, had some similar case, same symptom, the problem was SA related and not so easy to fix but anyway managed to fix and get 100% data (and still wondering why it happened...) , someone else suggested PCB (maybe ROM related then or something similar ?) , other have other ideas... well, without analyzing the drive it would be impossible to tell. It was my 2 cents, anyway.

Could very well be the PCB, had quite a few where a new PCB and subsequent ROM rebuild from the SA has worked.

Most of the WD Royal we see have contact corrosion and a MPU problem that is resolved by swapping the PCB. Symptoms look like bad SA, but it's not . . .

Oh boy!
So, he can not deal with that HDD.

If you can read SA and it looks fine but no access to user data/any sectors - heads issue, if cannot then a lot of issues.
