Strange HDD crash causes friends HDD to crash

July 16th, 2009, 13:21

Hey guys,

I have a SAMSUNG 160gb SP1614C
7200rpm
8M

Im running xp sp 3

I used this drive as a backup drive and when I formated my main drive i copied all the files over (music, programs, games, etc) on to it, then lazy as i am i waited a week before sorting everything out again, But when I wanted to access some files it would give me a message saying the drive is not formatted format now?

but other files I could access.

then a few days after these messages i would try go into any folder and it would take really long to access the file and I could not copy them, many files also became corrupt and would give errors when trying to open them.

I then installed a game that gave me a black screen when I tried to run it, i restarted 2 times and tried to run the game twice, the 3rd time the pc would give me a black screen right after the windows loading screen ( the on with windows logo and the load bar). after a loong time waiting for it to give the password screen everything was slow logging on, till the pc did all it does then everything worked fine, except when I go to my computer the seagate HDD (F) would show but had no details on it, and when I would right click or try open it, the pc would freeze.

anyway to the point, I took this hdd to my buds place to see if it wasnt just my pc that was messing around. and plugged it into his system, it gave all the same problems.

so i accepted the loss, but he just told me 2 days after i was there his seagate 1tb drive is doing the same thing. hes running vista ultimate

what could this be,? could it be a virus, if so why hasnt it effected my other 3 drives or his other 4?

can this data be recovered?
what should I do?

Thanks for reading my story :P

Hi,

It sounds like your drive have some physical problem, it is dieing.
But the Seagate 1T is a good candidate for this as well, so maybe ther is no context at all.
Anyway, this can be a virus too, but based on your story, i bet for the drive problem.

Regards,
Janos
