Error creating hard drive label

August 10th, 2009, 14:55

Hello! Thanks to the help of this forum I have already recovered/re-purposed one drive however I'm having trouble with another.

I received a drive from an old DVR box and had planned on using it as a pc drive, I connected it to the pc (sata) and the pc didn't recognize it. I followed the steps found in this post by Spildit and booted a linux live cd which was able to recognize the drive.

However when looking at the drive from ubuntu (I assume the disk analysis software was gparted) it shows the drive as being one big block of unallocated space. I then try to create a new partition and in doing so it tells me that it must setup a label for the disk, it goes through the process of creating the label but then fails saying unable to create disk label.

What options if any do I have?

Thanks!

The data is definitely not important. I'll try mhdd and see what I can do with it.

Thanks

mhdd shows no password on the drive (it shows security high, off).

When I try to erase the drive I get an error (can't write on drive):(
