Momentus 7200.2 issues

August 11th, 2009, 15:31

Hi guys,

In the last months I have got some 7200.2 drives which had deep circle scratch(es). Also, I have had two 7200.2 drives which destroyed itself during data restoration (circle scratches on platters). I haven't seen it on 2.5" drives of other manufacturers.

Most of them were dropped. At the same time, I have seen lots of dropped Hitachi drives with dead heads, but never circle scratches on platters ...

Please, could anybody explain why it happened? How to avoid that?

You have to use "special" imaging program like Data extractor or Deepspar, to avoid those scratches.

Don't drop them?

In my opinion and experience, this is not an uncommon problem with Seagate. One of their top engineers told me that their failure rate (including these) is well within "industry norms."

Once this problem begins, the drive becomes inoperable quickly. Continue to play with it in this state and you will brick it.
