Newbie question on getting data from bad sectors

September 23rd, 2009, 13:37

My friend brought me a Toshiba MK4018GAS. He said that "letters started jumping... and then screen went off.. and that was it".

What I saw is the HDD did not spin. I disassembled the hard drive and found out that heads got stuck to the parking ramp and in addition they were somehow blocking platters. I managed to remove and put heads back and after that I could recover most of the data with dd_rescue, but 11 megabytes.

My question: what possibilities exist there to read data from bad sectors? I understand that ECC cannot recover it, so it is more corrupt than good, but I'd like to see and decide myself, what is good and what is not.

Thanks.
