External HDD Problem

September 26th, 2009, 12:52

Hi ! I'm having a problem with my External HDD and would really appreciate any help whatsoever.

My HDD is a Western Digital External 500GB ("WD 500 AV MyBook") and the problem with it is that there is frequently a stutter in its performance. For example if Im playing an AVI file, the movie will suddenly pause for around 7-8 seconds and the HDD will make some clicking and whirring sounds for that period. After the clicking, the movie resumes and has skipped by around 7-8 seconds forward. This same sort of behavior is present with other files like MP3s or MPEG etc.

a) Is this normal for an external HDD (which I strongly doubt) or is it defective ?
b) Its still covered under the warranty and in case if its defective, will this be covered under the warranty ?

Would really appreciate the community's inputs on this. Thanks :) !!

Back up right away and get a new drive.
It should be replaced by warranty.
