Spin Retry Count going up 128 instead of down?

October 3rd, 2009, 16:31

Hey guys, these are my smart results. What suprises me is that the Spin Retry count doesnt decrease, it went up the last 3 weeks by about 3-4 up to 128. What does that mean, I assumed that it should decrease if its getting worse, or am i reading this wrong?

By the way, what do u guys think about my laptops hdd condition?

See my answer to your question in Usenet:

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys ... 522302dd43

Start/Stop Count 0 100 100 1422

Spinup Retry Count 30 128 100 0

It appears that the cooked value of the Spinup Retry Count starts at 100 and then increments by 1 for every 50 Start/Stop cycles where there have been no spinup retries.

In this way you can distinguish between a drive that has had no retries in, say, 1000 starts (120) and one that has been error free for 100 starts (102).
