500+ UNC blocks but SMART says OK

November 13th, 2009, 13:24

Drive is a Western Digital Scorpio 3200BEVT

I have no bad blocks (* BBK) but I do have 581 UNC and 2 AMNF, the smart data reports that the drive is OK, Western Digitals own tools find no error on the drive.

I guess the question is do I RMA this drive an on what grounds (I don't care about the data on it although it is still accessible), are UNC errors normal on drives, if so how many is too many, my number one concern is reliability. I need 100% reliable stuff as I travel to different clients throughout Europe and cannot afford to come home and find the data collected is bad.

Thats quite a few. The drive is on it's way to death.

Most likely why Smart isn't triggering yet is because those sectors are still only pending, and not reallocated yet.

I am not sure on the number of reallocated sectors it takes to trigger SMART on those drives.

Either way it is time to replace it
