Which torx bit for getting PCB off WD Caviar SE?

November 21st, 2009, 17:50

I am trying to find out what kind of torx (star) driver bit I need to take the screws out of a PCB on a WD Caviar SE (for a data-recovery related PCB swap). I have a few torx bits that *seem* to fit, but none of them seem to catch - the screws in the PCB seem so shallow or different in some way to other torx screws.

Am I missing something? What is the right tool for this job? I don't want to try to force the bit I've got and strip the screws...

Thanks!

The most of the drives uses T9 not T8.

OK, then my tools are misnumbered :)
I use those crapy wiha ESD stuff, I should get myself something branded :D
T9 of these just doesn't want to fit into any HDD torx screws...
But I can find some T9 here that fits, but that's a bit worn already - and not wiha

OK, decide for yourself what u need

I have T8 bit as well in one of my pack, and the T8 is good for T9 screws, but the best is the matching numbered, the T9.

Pepe, check the originate of the tools when you buy. :D
And try to avoid the tools wich have made in 5 letter named country wich starts with "C".

Hi,

I think Wiha is pretty much like a Brand as far as tools are concerned. I was trying to be somewhat ironic. I wasn't successful in that apparently :)

This is it:

and written "MADE IN GERMANY" on the handle...
This must be fine I guess.
T9 from this won't fit into HDD screws.

But as I told u I have other not so branded T9 screwdrivers that fits. I just thougth that the Wiha should be taken as a reference...

Ok, I think this doesn't matter, than i have an universal T9 wich is good for T8 and T9 as well. :D
Maybe my T8.5 is made in China?

I use chewing gum which has hardened over time to fit exactly.. :O)

Anyway Kestrel.. Splash out on the full set, go and blow a few pennies on that recovery ;o)

I use T8 also. Only use T9 when thread of the screw is slightly off. Though I use several sets of tools, and each T8 does seem to be slightly different size which is why some of my tools are a better fit than others despite beign same size! :?
