And this continues. Put patient rom on perfect match PCB and get same results. Drive heads make normal bad head sound while terminal is saying head mask FFFF but when terminal is saying AM Reaquired, the heads are bashing about very fast. Have not been able to get Z prompt as drive does not come ready. Have not opened and looked inside. Anybody have any ideas if this is bad/weak heads or more likely physical damage in the service tracks?

Looks like its having trouble catching servo, my guess is head issues or platter wobble sort of thing

Thanks for the reply. The drive has no vibration at all so I don't think there is a wobble problem. I put in a new set of heads. I wasn't too optimistic about them working though because even though they are from a drive with exact same model and FW and very close date, it was from a different country. Now the drive does not click at all anymore, it just stays busy and I get this from terminal.

Can you edit some sectors in ramdom ?

Had a similar case change heads and the problem was the same.

Maybe a scracth in the platte.

Have you already ruled out PCB also? Could be damaged R/W channel causing signal corruption.

Put donor heads back in donor drive and they still work. At least media is not killing heads. I can not edit any sectors or write to the drive at all to even clear smart with either set of heads. Put rom on good PCB before any head swaps and produced exact same results. I can not find any platter damage at all. I think I am going to try and source a better matching donor drive. Thanks to all for the input.

Tried to start on F> and tried to load system sectors and check answer´s , even there u can did a head test , from this way u could know wich surface/Head has problems

CE Log error, i dont think so because its sending AM " Adress Mark catching and SFI " Swtich Full Int" , problems when tried to attempt to read .i would suggest check inside for head crash too.

My thoughts:
1) Original problem bad heads
2) Current problem incompatibe heads

Well I figured I would let you all know how this one turned out. Unsuccessful. I finally found a perfect match drive with the same site code. It cost a small fortune. I put the good heads in the patient drive. It initialized fine. I started to image and in just about a minute it became very unstable. Then I started to get the same terminal report as with original heads. When I removed the heads and inspected them, they looked very damaged. I tried cleaning them and it turns out they were just very dirty. I got them looking perfect again and they tested perfect back in the donor drive. I put them back in the patient drive again and the same thing happened again. The drive only worked briefly and the heads got all gummed up again. Not sure if this is possible but I think the coating on the platters is breaking down.
