Seagate 750GB External Hard Disk Drive Does not Spin.

November 30th, 2009, 20:21

Hi, I have Seagate external hdd (750GB) SATA.
I dropped it down a few times however it was working fine untill today. Disk does not spin and gives some weird sound like it's trying to spin but it can't.
I took HDD out of the case (External HDD Case) and put into my computer's case and connected to sata cable and power, same thing occured. HDD Does not spin but some sound is coming out from the middle of HDD. Then it stops for 1 sec (silence) and starts making some sounds again.

What are my optins here?
I have really important work on that hdd. I'm programmer and I have source-codes on that HDD which i havent backed up anywhere else.
Please help.

Hi,

the spindle is probably seized, or heads are stuck to the platters.
If u really need the data I do not recommend DIY attempts, as it is easy to render everything unrecoverable or at least multiply the recovery costs with an integer (>2).
I would suggest U to contact PCImage, CK, or Mike at mjm.co.uk
We can also give u an estimation of the costs.

99% certain to be seized.

I called up to seagate and they said that recovery will cost about 1500GBP.. I dont have that much money, is there any other way to repair spindle or whatever it is?

Seagate charge at least double to what other people can do the job for.

Ok, the thing is, before i copied all information to External HDD i had all same information on my normal pc hdd partition D:\. I copied all files to external hard drive from partition D:\ and deleted it and then resized partition C:\ to have all the space what was on D:\. Is it possible to recover that formatted partition D:\ to somewhere so I can have my data?

Partition D could be recovered, unless you have overwritten that data.

You could try any decent DR s/w.

getdataback, R-Studio etc..

Most will allow a demo download to see if the data is recoverable or not.

Ok, for those who may have the same problem i can recommend this:

it seems that this drive is experiencing spindle failure.
this happens when the spindle motor can not spin up the platter to the operational RPM of the drive.

Freezer Trick:

though this is an old trick, you have to understand that the basic technology for the HDD hasn't changed in 30 years....
it still works.

freeze overnight if you have a frost free refrigerator or for at least 30 hours if you have a conventional fridge.

you will have a window of about 10-15 minutes after which the drive will not be usable any longer.
recover all your most important files first, and then go for the less important ones.
