Hi,
A model number would be handy, but you are facing a seized bearing, or stuck heads surely.

thanks - the model was Western Digital 1TB SATAII HDD 16M Cache Green Power
does this help?

Yep, you got a stucked motor or the platters are not spinning. DO NOT POWER ON this drive any further if you want your data back. I would say, send it in for the recovery in your area.

oh thanks - if the data isn't that important is there something I try to have a crack at fixing? i.e. opening it up/

No, there is nothing you can do.
RMA it.

RMA?
BTW the drive of course is about 1-2 months just out of warranty. Is it just me or is the disk drive reliability been dropping quite a bit over the last couple of years

check the warranty in the WD website.
Normaly is 3 Years warranty.
