Maxtor 6Y080L0STD fried voltage regulator? board replacement

I have a drive that I hooked up to a usb-ide adapter to transfer data to another computer. When I connected the adapter, I connected the usb-ide part, before connecting the power adapter and spinning up the drive. I think this delivered some power to the drive through usb and when i connected the power adapter it started smoking. It looks like the voltage regulator mosfet got fried. I found a spec sheet for the mosfet, available here:

Would it be possible to replace the drives PCB with a similar one and recover the data?
If the PCB can be replaced, what would I have to look for in the replacement PCB? I have another maxtor 80GB drive that is NIB, but I believe it is the 8mb cache version of the drive. It says Kit: L01P080 on the box.

Match the code on your label M6FYA plus info on front of drive model number and code

If you match the M6FYA and the K,M,B,A code, this is enough, don't care for others.

BUT!
The mosfet makes the -5V voltage for preamp-chip inside the HDA.
If the mosfet burned, there is a chance for preamp is burned too.
(The best if you can meausre this before any powering attempt.)
If you match the pcb, and the drive can't recalibrate, only makes clicking noise, don't let the drive for clicking!!!
Poweroff immediately, and seek for professional help.
(There is a chance for damaged preamp/head will damage your data or scratch up the surface.)

If the preamp is short, the new pcb will die as well....

How can I measure it? I have a digital volt-ohm meter if that helps.

the easiest for "first try"-person:

get the another drive, wich is cancicate for pcb donor.
Remove the PCB, power on the pcb only, and measure the power pins for the preamp.
Than switch to the -|>|- mode, and measure the power pins in the HDA's connector.
You should measure 3 + 1 screw, and note for yourself the values.

Than repeat on the patient HDA's connector, and compare.
If you have got any value (excluding the screw <-> GND pin) less than 500 (mV), your preamp is damaged or dead.

I don't know if it will help you, but the damaged part is a MOSFET + flywheel diode.
