TOSHIBA MK6034GSX BGA Rom worries/doubts

December 14th, 2009, 17:09

Hello There,

I have the above disk in, spins fine, no spindle probs. Classic Click of death, but atola insight tells me its a PCB problem, probably (i'm guessing) because these disks appear to have some basic SA info in the rom, so it still ID's ok. I get:

Device information:
TOSHIBA MK6034GSX
Serial number: X6F7T0AUT
Firmware revision: AH102E
Capacity: 117,210,240 sectors or 60,011,642,880 bytes
512 bytes per sector

Diagnostics results
According to the status register, circuit board is malfunctioning.
Full Diagnostic Log
Circuit Board (PCB)
Device is powered on. A power cycle is needed...
Applying power and watching spin-up currents...
Current oscillogram (12V):

Current oscillogram (5V):

Device is still not ready
Registers: 0101 0001 0001 0000 0000 0000 1010 Alt: 1010
According to the status register, circuit board is malfunctioning.

But then it just spins down again. I have exact donor, and want to go ahead with a PCB swap before the HSA route.

So here is the worry: I have never done a BGA rom swap. See photo, i am guessing its IC6. I Have a Hakko hot air rework station, full nozzle set and good hands, but at best I can see this helping me remove. No idea how to replace. Any ideas?
- Am i right thinking that IC6 has the additives?
- Any offers to do the romswap? please PM me.
_ Anyone had any luck with non-IR swaps on these smaller BGA chips?

Thanks!

I bet it is dead heads.

Yes you will need a BGA chip remover to swap the adaptives. Doing a heads swap will be much easier to try.

i can handle this kind of chip swap. it no easy work even you had expensive BGA rework station. and it very thin as A4 paper. it may have chance transfiguration & broken when you hot up. good luck

It's IC1
It is unlikely PCB problem
Make sure SN from ID matches with the drive's SN on the lid
You can do it w/o IR but it's PITA anyway.
This is how you do such re-work w/o IR

With the symptoms you describe it's most likely heads. If you're certain the PCB is original then do head swap.

And who are you my friend? quite new to the forum i see. I have learned a lot from here but also busted my a.s and wallet learning and buying the best equipment, hey i even give out tips to some newbies too! I also do this as part of my living. It's cool to share with the right people.

I think the message is: If you are a casual information getter, looking to save a few $$ and DIY, then this is wrong place to be, but on the other hand, make an effort, and you will receive some help ;)

I am doing the HSA swap this evening, will report back.

BTW: PCB is original, checked that (atola insight did it for me actually ;)

Fair do's. Regarding the WD aligment problem, I KNOW the secret, honestly, and I'll share it here with you:

Spend thousands of hours and dollars creating a precision tool to do it for you with micrometer adjustments! (and even then only have a 50% success rate)

There, I have said it, so go and shoot me ;)

Not happened for me yet! I have pictures of others, but THEN I WOULD BE SHOT, and rightly so. Build your own, send me your pictures, and I'll share some opinions ;)

BACK ON TOPIC NOW..

does it work?

Re: TOSHIBA MK6034GSX BGA Rom worries/doubts

December 17th, 2009, 9:41

It is a prototype and is undergoing further development & refinement.

I gave it to another DR shop to try and they said it was the most effective tool that they had seen for that purpose.

I have not tested it extensively, but it does "work". It provides a precise way to adjust the zenith and azimuth of the head stack bearing post. It is usually a tedious process.

I don't know that I will sell it because if it is not used correctly, it can damage the heads and platters (through over-adjustment). Don't want that on my conscience . . .

That is fabulous Jono, I have only got as far as some very ugly tests, clamps, spings, screws (i said UGLY) only one in 20 has worked. What success rate are you having and up to what size disks have you managed? How about the Z axis, do you thing it matters?

Jono, i would be interested in buying one too. ;)

I think you would sell a lot of these, even at $1000 USD.

Thanks. I have sent the tool in for a couple of modifications, and I really didn't have much of a chance to work with it yet, so I have no useful data. (All I know is that I loaned it to another fellow on this forum during the development process, and he'd like to get it back!)
