Hope this does not count as spamming but just wanted to help any other forum users who have similar problems.
My new (less than 6 months) Hitachi TravelStar 7K320 failed without warning and I had some irreplaceable data including my LiveMail address book and a couple of virtual images on the drive. Turns out the problem was a bad PCB and I was lucky enough to find a matching one on eBay. I live in New Jersey and from reading this forum I found DrNJ so I took my patient and donor drives to his company. He was able to do the PCB and NVRAM swaps and I got my drive back so I'm now a very happy camper with a backup drive who has learned his lesson. The price was reasonable and service was quick.
