S.M.A.R.T Problem

January 2nd, 2010, 18:01

Hi
I was wondering if anyone of you HDDGurus could help me out a bit and explain me some things.

I have a Maxtor 6Y160P0 PATA disk, I remapped approx. 1500 bad sectors with MHDD.
But still my BIOS says smart status "BAD" and my Win7 tells me my HDD is going to fail.

I was wondering why isn't the smart table updated?
And what can I do? I've scanned the drive after the remapping of the sectors and I've got no bad sectors anymore so what do you guys think?

Just ask if you need more information and I will provide it asap.

ps. I've got NO important information on this disk so it's just a little project of my own ds.

Bad sectors are not the only source of smart errors. Have a go with HDDscan, and post back any issues found. That would be a far better representation of your problem than already provided. It would also cause a lot more members to chime in with their opinions. If it is still under warranty just send it back. Dealing with IO controls, buffers and that random structure that may be sent back on the wrong command: I can tell you that you are traveling a VERY rough road.

I'm not interested in sending back my drive, just want to learn what I can do about such problems ^^

do you want me to do a surface scan?

Hello,

your drive had a lot of unreadable sectors in the past, and with rewrite, you have re-allocated all until the G list is filled with these.
But because you have beginnig of bearing problem or a little weak head, you can re-fresh the sectors with writing, but some of these will be apear as bad again soon.
This is why the smart shows failed status. (exactly beacuse the G is full)

This drive crys for SS.
If it will survive you will get a quite good drive, but if fails, then wants to fall to the trash box. :D

SS? tell me how and whats the point of doing it please :)
Want to learn something and not only doing what others tell me to do!
The drive itself doesn't matter to me so bring it on.
