Seagate Swap Smaller Drive into 1.5 TB External FreeAgent

January 3rd, 2010, 16:30

Dropped the drive onto the floor. Ooops, that was my backup. I've bought another and am backing up my internal drives now. However, I'd like to use the external case. I removed the 1.5 TB and stuck it into my PC to verify that it's dead; it is. Then I took a working 160 GB Seagate out of another PC which was working, and installed it into the external USB 2.0 enclosure. The drive spins up but is not "seen" on Windows XP, Windows 7 nor a Mac Snow Leopard.

I guess that the USB controller either died with the hard drive or perhaps it can't handle the small drive. Any ideas on which is more likely?

Thank you.
