Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have Maxtor/Seagate 2.5" (STM980215A) IDE hard disk locked by a friend by Dell laptop BIOS. I searched at several forums and tried various software i.e. ATAPWD, MHDD, HDat, HDD Repair but couldn't find a way.
Someone used SeDiv to read the vendor track but I don't know does it require to connect by COM port. Is it possible to read vendor track just by connecting through the normal IDE connection?
Like I read HDD Repair can be used to read/write on Maxtor, WD, Samsung and Fujitsu HDDs, is it possible in Seagates just read vendor track using some software?
