is it possible its the case that is damaged and not the drive or is it 50:50 chance?

it was stored and when she opened the storage door it fell.

tried twice to hook the usb, it wouldnt read.

i think its a seagate 1 or 1.5 Tara external drive.

very probable the disk itself.
These seagates are very sensitive to a drop.

I am sure she wont spend the price fixing such a drive usually costs. she doesnt have any money and even if she did i know she wont.
is it worth a shot to take it out of the box and try connecting it directly? is there any chance to such an act?

Had a customer this afternoon with exact same problem.
Here is the advice I gave him:

1. Buy a new external drive to back up important data from your pc NOW
2. if your data is important:
- if you dont have the money now or dont want to spend it now
- - store your disk on a save place and put money aside day by day for a later DR
3. any hardware/software action to your drive on DIY basis will definitely cause more costs for DR
4. if your data is not important - forget the drive and do with it what ever you like
5. there is - for sure - no other option or hint or suggestion
