That model don't have any upgrades.
If your drive failed, take it to a pro or just replace it if you don't need your data.

The current firmware is YAR511W0 and the one in the download section is YAR51EW0. So my question is how do i install the firmware in the link above?

If i wanted to take the disk to a professional, i would have done so already.

1. why do you want to upgrade firmware?
2. if you want a tool to do it google search 'acelab'.

1. The HDD sometimes behaves abnormally. When writing it starts a clicking sound and after that becomes unreacheble. After a spindown/spinup it works fine again for a while.

2. I figure, since I found another firmware for the HDD i will see if it works better with that one.

Any ideas?

I am aware that I probably need to change disks.

I was only wondering if someone on this forum could help me to use the file under the following link :http://files.hddguru.com/download/Non-PC-3000%20firmwares/Maxtor/Maxtor%207Y250M0%20YAR51EW0.rar

It must be good for something?

Guy's I'll explain for him on Swedish.

Tjenare Davidoff,

Thank you for all the answers, in several languages aswell.

I have already recovered all data from the disk, I was only hoping to be able to repair the drive instead of throwing it away.

My conclusion will be then that nobody knows how to use this file: http://files.hddguru.com/download/Non-P ... R51EW0.rar
?

Hi again,
Of course we all know how to use it, but the thing is that your drive don't need it...your drive is failing and a frimware upgrade is not the solution.
So bin the drive and buy a new one, and be happy that you had time to do a backup before the drive is totaly dead.

Thank you for your will to share your knowledge, and for knowing what's bwst for me.

your drive have failing heads or surface problem.
Any fw mod will be useless in this case
Maxtor have a lot of calibration data in the modules, so if you write in fw from the link, your drive will be dead completely.
This pack is only good for pros for using the modules as donors if needed and if the pro knows wich is for wich and knows exactly what he is doing.

If you want to destroy your drive, using a hammer is an easyer solution.
But if you really want to destroy your drive with fw updating, google for hddrepair

I know my drive is ****** up and I will throw it away, I promise. I just wanted to do some experimenting first, and hopefully learn something in the process. But now it goes in the bin!
