(Solved) 1TB 7200.11 - Spinup, Rumble, Clunk, Spindown....

February 7th, 2010, 7:18

Result. Problem Solved :-)

Who needs a Pro (In this particular case) lol

HDD Running sweet, 100% of Data Backed up.

Seems like the "Standard Solution" Worked, and i'm £500-1000 in pocket.

I admit though, i have done ALOT of research, bought some tools in the last couple of weeks, bought a few dead HDD's off eBay and fixed them up.

I took the risk of loosing it all, and luckily for me, i've got all my data.

Before any of the newbies asks, NO - I won't tell you what i did, or spoon-feed you with information, it's taken me weeks of time, research, knowledge of certain hardware / software to do this, which is ALL available in this very forum.

Thanks all,
Dean

Hi,

Yes, the knowledge is the key...
Additionally the good tools in good hands too.
Sometimes works for "home users" but the risk is too high for common recommendation.

...

Additionally there is a lot of special cases wich is hard to fix in perfectly laboratry as well.
In these cases home useres have 0% chance for success, and 100% for making things more worse.

By the way, Dean,

If you count up your time and bought tools, spare hdd-s, and so on, it is worth, or the 1 time professional help would be cheaper? :P

And what do you say, if you count in the risk, because until you get your data, the data was all the time in possibly danger.

Now take into account the hundreds, and I do mean hundreds, of other hard drive related failures and the hard work of all the professionals who developed solutions and here you see why distribution of this knowledge to newbies is not so common...

If it was only a standard failure you could have had it done for less than £100 or maybe for free . Seagate still offering free recovery?

When you say "standard solution", are you referring to the terminal fix for the 7200.11 BSY bug?

HDD Spaz: Drive was OEM from supplier, so repair was out of the question, and recovery was definatley out.

The hardware, including test drives cost me less than £40, but they will all come in use again, perhaps more often than I thought. If you listened to my soundclip though, it certainly sounded nothing like a standard fix, more heads :-)

Fzabkar: It was kind of the standard terminal fix, but with a twist an more involved than the other drives I had fixed. It did worry me at a point, as my PCB was differe to all others I had seen.

Sorted now though, just want to find a couple of reliable drives to get my backed up onto again. Any recommendations?
