Macbook harddrive REP

February 18th, 2010, 18:17

Apple recently acknowledged a problem with the hard drives in many first and 2nd generation macbooks.

Can anyone tell me if the issues with these drives are always the same? Is it the same model drive (but different size) in all of these machines? I'd love to hear thoughts from anyone who has had to deal with a large number of these failures.

The problem from our perspective is that we only deal with failed drives. We don't know the percentages of failure vs. installed base, etc.

What we see:

1. Seagate Momentus with bad heads / media damage, especially with FW 7.01 & 3CAE;
2. Hitachis with weak / failed head or media issues - J9SA00 series;
3. Fujitsus with media issues or head crashes;

Yet years ago we replaced some of the OEM drives with Seagates that we bought from distribution and are aware of almost no failures with those since.
