Confirming bad heads on Fujitsu MHV2040AH

I have a Fujitsu MHV2040AH, F/W 00000096 that came in from a customer who had let chkdsk run for 4 hours on it until it completely stopped responding. MHDD shows almost all UNC. The logical explanation is that he wasted the heads doing the chkdsk and a head swap is in order. However, the drive identifies in bios with correct info and the drive is not clicking. Until now, all of the 'bad head' drives that I have fixed have all clicked. Any thoughts?

Customer did not say that the laptop was dropped or damaged, just that he tried fixing it by the chkdsk in Recovery Console. What stands out to me on the above is the Reallocated Sector Count. Thanks in advance for any input.

U have many reallocated sectors that could be caused a overflow of defect list , caused by maybe one bad head wich find a lof of sectors and filled , with proper tools & experience could be getting u data back, this case should be need hardware control, so by software its very hard u get data back, and could be dangerous for heads the attempts of retries could be end´s , on a knocking case with BSY state , the best should be send to a DR company here!

Hint: There are some family´s on fujitsu with tendence to bad surface so be carefull !!

even bigger hint...... Fujitsu does NOT report G-List entries like other drives......... So the dec/hex (ID 5) is no good to you!

Attribute 5 is perfectly useful to someone with a modicum of insight. You don't need to be a guru to see it.

Hint #3: It may help if you examined all 48 bits of the attribute value. It may also help to read the Product Manual, although it's not necessary.

Your wrong, a modicum of Insight will not help. I suggest that you read the proper Fujitsu manual and also sign the NDA with Toshiba which is required to access that information.

If you really had the proper manual, assuming one is even available, then you wouldn't need me to tell you the answer.

Reallocated sectors count = 13566324 = 0x00CF0174
Reallocation event count = 435028340 = 0x19EE0174

Reallocation event count = 435028340 = 0x19EE0174 (this is a better indication, again open to interpretation by each vendor)

Nonsense. :lol:

The drive is only good insofar as its number of reallocated sectors isn't yet large enough to trip SMART.

And yes, the SMART attributes are interpreted differently by each vendor, sometimes within their own models.

If you really had the manual, assuming one even exists, then you would know that the above numbers are incomplete.

Your job is to answer the question, namely how many reallocated sectors are being reported by this particular drive, allowing for the fact that SMART attributes are interpreted differently by each vendor?

I'd give you Hint #5, but a "guru" who has access to "the proper manual" shouldn't need any more help.
