Inverted power issue [HITACHI hts541616j9sa00]

February 27th, 2010, 4:59

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my 2.5 SATA HDD. I gave him an inverted power (+12 instead of +5), so now it`s not working.

The thing, marked "N" near the F1 has no conduction, as far as I know it`s a power protection diode, in the case of inverted power it must become a conductor preventing the hdd from further damage... But it`s not blown, and as I said has endless resistance.
So, the right leg of this diode has -5V and so does the 3 elements (small, mid, bigger) at right of it and 3 small jumpers.
One of the main questions is: where does the +5V (7,8,9 pins) go except the left leg of N diode? There`s no connection for +5V on the other side of PCB.
And the main question: what can be the reason of the dead HDD?

See this thread:

I'm not a DR guy, but I suspect that the motor controller IC (TLS2501) may have taken a hit. It would be connected directly to the +5V supply.

If you need to replace the board, you may need the following parts to be working.

LE25FV055T, 512Kbit, 64Kx8, Sanyo, Serial flash memory:

BR93L66RF-WE2, Rohm, Microwire BUS Serial EEPROM, 256×16bits, marking RL66:

I would confirm that neither are powered directly from +5V. To this end, test for continuity between the 4R7 coil (L1) and the power pins of each IC.

Best of luck.

You more than likely blew your TVS get a voltage meter and check this out

I can't see one on this board.

More than likely Fuse is damaged. This is the component marked 'N'.
