Diagnosis? Barracuda 7200.8 ST3300831A not detected by BIOS

March 9th, 2010, 9:24

Dear all,

Got a strange situation here: After powering down my computer yesterday, the HDD is not detected by the BIOS any longer.
Also, no success on different computers and with external cases.

Terminal output on "regular" power-up (i.e., no business cards etc. were used):
Interface task reset
4096k x 16 buffer detected
TONKA - 1_Disk S.00 01-27-05 12:46

Specs:
Barracuda 7200.8
ST3300831A
P/N 9Y7284-501
Firmware 3.01
Date Code 05406
Site Code WU

PCB sticker 100335769

large chip ST E 100356070

VQ443JTG

Any help on error diagnosis???

Thank you very much,

You should let the pcb as is it, don't put anything between contacts and post terminal log here....

Ok...Now I see it....

Try CTRL+Z and see if it responds in terminal.

No, doesn't seem to do anything... But let me double-check my TX-Connection...

... which seems to be working ok... Any hints how to fix this? Is there a chance to swap the PCB? Any sources?

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks for your help, guys...

In that case: no chance of swapping the PCB, I guess...

One more thing: The disk sounds like it doesn't release the heads from their parking position (no clicking noise whatsoever). Could any of you guys point me to the right access seal (which seal to remove? -> see attached photo)?

I could then try to release the heads manually under a laminar flow box (don't have a real clean room environment in my living room ;-) )? See any chances?

Cheers,
Chris

Its your hard disk, and your data, so its your call. But I strongly advise you read the sticky about DIY Data recovery first, and also evaluate the value of the data.

There really are so many factors to consider when opening a hard disk, and if data is invaluable to you then at this point you should make a decision as to whether you can live without it should anything go wrong...

It's obvious data is NOT important, or is it worth a trial-and-error at risk of making everything unrecoverable ?!?

Dear all,

after doing a little more research, I found out that two of the chips (largest chip: 100356070 and third largest chip: 100317176) on the PCB are getting REALLY HOT after few seconds of operation... Therefore I decided to give it a shot with a new PCB nevertheless before trying to open the disk...

Thanks for your help and advice.
