Drive not mountable/accessable but data still good

March 16th, 2010, 17:34

I would like to know if this drive(the c drive) data is salavagable.

I had a power outage(for just a second) that caused my operating system to BSOD on load up(you see the windows logo and loading bar). It would restart immediately over and over again so I got it to stop restarting after BSOD and read the error message.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Stop: 0x000000ED (0x89aF1900 0xC0000006 0x0000000 0x0000000)

I ran ubuntu live cd and was able to mount both ntfs partitions(one OS and the other data). I then(stupidly) decided to see if I could fix it by following some recovery instructions I found online. I tried 'fixboot' from the recovery console in the windows xp disc. I know I messed this up in retrospect because I was at the C:\ prompt and did 'fixboot' and it said it didnt find the boot sector or that it was damage and it created/wrote a new one. But I realized later that I should have had to select a boot paration before doing 'fixboot' but it didnt give me that option so I missed that part.

I rebooted the drive and then instead of the windows logo it just said.

Disk read error occured
press crtl+alt+del

I ran the ubuntu live cd again and this time the OS drive isnt mountable and from a windows os when I try accessing the drive(the computer does see it) it says some kind of error or corruption and I cant access it. I'm still able to mount the second parition and get data off of it. I've tried supergrub disk to rewrite the mbr to see if that would work and I get the same crtl+alt+del disk error.

I just want to know if this drive can be accessed again if I follow some instructions. I dont want to run any hard drive data recovery programs because they never work, are to complicated, cost money and I dont know what to search for. I just want to be able to mount the drive and get the data off if it. I think it can be recovered because whatever fixboot did, was probably minor, has something to do with the partition table or something simple(for those that know) and the data is fine but I just need to get it to act like a mountable drive again. I just dont how to do it.

I dont even want to try and fix it anymore, I just want to get it back to being mountable to retrieve/browse the data. Can that be done? anyone know how?

first do a sector copy to a known good drive. stop 0xed usually is only some bad sectors but it is possible the drive is failing soon so get the data off the drive. AFTER you have done the sector copy you should use a good file recovery tool like r-studio to see if your data can be salvaged.

Well ,
Clone It With Ignoring BAD Sectors So That you Get a Fairly Good Cloned Copy then Use a Logical DR Software Like Getdataback

I wasnt able to clone it, clonezilla wasnt able to clone it because it was corrupt and I'm not familiar/dont have any other clone software. But I was able to use getdataback to find all the data(its recovery tree is close to browsing the actual drive) so I bought that(a data recovery program that actually works and is easy to use, shocking). And I'm in the process of coping data now.

Thanks for the helpful responses.

Btw, what could I use to do the sector clone without bad sectors as has been mentioned?

I'm only familiar with clonezilla, which is top notch for 1 to 1 clones, havent always had success with images from it though.

first thanks for replying, sorry for checking it later :|
here's the thing now, error starts to showes every time i start my pc
so, actually i researched about this error last night and came across this article related about fixing this UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME as you can see
so, the article says my boot volume got corrupted and i did follow the instructions
here's the command what i use in cmd.
(opened cmd by my windows usb stich)
Command 1# – Diskpart
Command 2# – List volume
Command 3# – Exit
Command 4# – D: (You’re Windows Drive Letter)
Command 5# – Bootrec /fixmbr
Command 6# – Bootrec /fixboot
Command 7# – Chkdsk /f (Try chkdsk /f /r If “Chkdsk /f” command Wont Works)

Command 8# – Y

After “chkdsk” command completes, just restart my computer and it shows bootmgr is missing

what is happing to my computer?
