Maxtor DiamondMax 20 - Bad Diode

March 17th, 2010, 23:19

Hello everyone,

Kinda found the board and hoping I could possible get some help. I'm a programmer, not a EE/CE >_<

My external died and I figured the controller just went. Hooked everything up with another IDE-to-USB to find smoke coming from it. Seems like its coming from a diode right in front of the power.

I don't have a camera on me, but I can get a picture if you want. The damage in minimal, there isn't even a burn mark on the board, but the diode is cracked and that's where the smoke is coming from.

Anyways, I believe I can just replace the PCB bored, but I'm not positive and would like some of you pro to let me know what you think. Its a Maxtor DiamondMax 20 160 GB PATA. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks,
Daniel

It is TVS more than likey but post photos to make sure. It is actually TVS you can remove it and get your data then trash the drive

Search for a TVS on the forum.

A picture would definitely be helpful. Do a search for "TVS" diode, read a little. The drive is unprotected once that is removed, and the USB adapters usually come with the cheapest power supply made. You definitely don't want to use that on a drive in that condition. Hook it up internaly

Be careful you may smoke your motor IC too.
